National Volunteer Week: Why Volunteering Is the Most Rewarding Way to Spend Your Time

Being a volunteer can bring you happiness and also help someone in need... it's also something that doesn't have to cost you anything, only some of your time.

I have always wanted to give back as I feel (even though I have been through some really dark times) I am very lucky. I have a home, food and warmth and many in our community do not and they need a helping hand.

I have worked with Orange Sky - A great initiative that provides showers and a washing service for those in need. The vans arrive at a set time every week and are always paired with a meal.

Serving centre,  the community are there with their washing, they head in to have a meal and then pick their cleaned items up on the way out.

We the volunteers wash, dry and fold the items while they have their meal.

We always have chairs set out as well as quite a number of the community want to have a chat - many of them are lonely too and this is an opportunity to feel less isolated and have a bit of a chat about life! You would be amazed by some of their careers and the circumstances that brought them to living rough.

With Orange sky you decide how little or how much time you have to give and the best locations for you.

If you're looking to give back I would definitely recommending Orange Sky. Check them out here.

Another charity that is loads of fun is Friend in Me. Friend in Me is a registered Australian charity that promotes inclusion and acceptance in at-risk and disadvantaged children through sensory-friendly events, workshops and programs.

The Friend in Me organisation brings together children of all ages, nationalities and abilities to dance, play, sing, create and most importantly, make lifelong friends and memories they will cherish forever.

I am on the Board of this charity and could not be prouder of the work we do in ensuring no children are left behind. We are always looking for volunteers for our fun events so this is also a fabulous way to give back.
